I get so nervous when I start a new fitness class/club

Hands up if you get a massive delivery of nervous butterflies in your tummy when you attend a new fitness club or a new class?

What is with that? Why do we get so nervous?

Here’s our view…

Firstly, no-one wants to be the new kid…
The one who always needs the teachers help or goes off in the wrong direction. It’s the same feeling as being the new kid back at school. Well, everyone started as the new kid, plus no-one ever does anything 100% correct. In our classes, you’ll see us forever teaching / tweaking members because they need reminding or re-teaching. Doesn’t take the nerves away but it can help your mindset towards being a new kid.

‘Do gym in your pants and vest top’ if you haven’t got the wrong kit…
Well wasn’t that humiliating s a kid! Nowadays, fashion is fitness and fitness is fashion. You’ve got long leggings, cropped, black, white, marble effect, even ones with zips! Tops are more than a meal out and trainers sometimes require a mortgage downpayment. No wonder we can feel like we’re gymming it in our pants and vest with all this going on. But who the hell cares…it’s the person and the progress we care about, plus you’re just going to sweat in them anyway. All comes out in the wash and no-one looks better doing a bad squat just because their outfit is on pointe!

We want in on the joke…
Nothing worse than standing on the edge of a class hearing several people chatter and all laugh at something and you have absolutly NO idea what it was about. You’re the new kid again…

We like to know the layout…
Even the most simplest of things such as where the toilets are, the parking facilities, shower areas, do you pick anywhere in class or do you have a specific place? Which studio am I supposed to be in? It seems that second time round when we don’t have to ask all of these questions we are a little calmer. Everyone has to ask these at some point, so although it feels like you’re the only one asking, the staff are used to it! It’s their job!

So how do you overcome the fear?

I am not sure the feeling of being nervous will never not be there, it’s simply the worry of the unknown and the new. Ride it, try to remember the above and enjoy the experience. Let go of worrying what others think of you and spend that time looked to whether this new fitness club or class will give you want you want and get you to where you want to be.
