6 tips on alcohol and weight loss…

Oh this topic is a HUGE one! And one of the most frequently asked questions when women want to join our BeBikini program. Other questions are things like do I have to do weights to lose weight? If you have that question then this blog will help clear that up for you.

Christmas, or in fact ANY time of the year can be difficult as drinking is a social part of our life. Many situations come with alcohol, and when we start a new diet or fitness plan, drinking can be one of the more confusing parts.

How do you socialise, drink and still lose weight?

The fact is that if you are a serious weight loss goer, and there is a goal in mind, then cutting out the alcohol is a great way to go. Alcohol can be full of calories, carbs and causes us to eat more. It can cause inflammation and also imbalance within our body. But you know that! And yet still we find it desperately hard to balance losing weight with socialising and drinking. We cannot be hermits forever in our quest for leaner bodies, and for some cutting out drinking is not or will not be an option.

Be mindful everything has a limit.

Don’t set the bar high and want to be a size 8 if you are not willing to give up drinking heavily twice a week. The same thing goes for chocolate, believe me I have met people wanting to be a size 8 who do not want to give up eating a bar of chocolate a day. It’s give and take. So, firstly be sure what you are willing to do, matches what you are wanting. For many women, it is to be leaner, happier and healthier and you do not have to cut alcohol out all together to get that. There is nothing wrong with letting yourself have a glass of wine once in awhile, but what we want to make sure of is that you keep it under control and make smart choices.

Mix it wisely

Alcohol is calorific, but your mixer doesn’t have to add to that equation. Ask for low calorie, soda water or simply have it on the rocks.

Fake it ’til you make it

A tip from one wise lady – my mother! She would have a gin and tonic first off when she is out, and then she would actually fake it by having slimline tonic and lime. Her friends knew no different! Social pressure can be a BIG one, and faking it with your friends can be a huge part of decreasing this.

One or t’other

Same with eating and drinking and mixing your drinks. Don’t go OTT by having the fish and chips and red wine. Choose one or the other. Are you going to drink or are you going to eat the less helpful food? You can’t have your cake AND eat it so choose one or the other to manage your calorie intake. Simple!

Decide what you want

Do you want empty calories with low carb or calories with carbs and potentially some good antioxidants? Vodka and gin are often the go to on diets, simply because they are low carb. But, I am willing to have the extra carbs in red wine and the antioxidants that come with it, because I enjoy this more than a gin and tonic sometimes. When I do, I simply revert to the ‘one or the other’ trick and pick a low carb meal to go with it.

Find a better excuse

Sometimes when we’ve decided we’re “not drinking”, it is more energy and mental willpower to actually NOT drink that glass of wine when you are out. Add that to some social pressure and you’re ready to give in when you were genuinely wanting to have an alcohol free night. Finding a better excuse can not only limit the social pressure AND the mental willpower you require, but it will make you enjoy your night much more and feel less restricted. Excuses such as ‘I am driving’ or ‘I have work in the morning at 5am’. These all take that pressure away both socially and mentally.

Health, happiness, fitness and weight loss can be difficult to master. So much advice and so much confusion.

There is a reason we are focused on purely WOMEN’S health and fitness, and it is because we a have 7 times more hormones than men, and we think about food and fitness differently. We NEED a focused plan that not only gives us the results, but gives us real time, usable tricks that really aren’t tricks, they are simply focused on how women’s minds and bodies respond to weight loss and health gains.
